I-LEAD's Higher Learning Center
Come visit us and other students, faculty and partners, and participate in educational activities on I-LEAD's Second Life Campus. Second Life is an online, 3D virtual world imagined and created entirely by its Residents.
There are two parts to getting into Second Life. (There is no cost to sign up, download the software, or to utilize the world.)
1. Firstly, go to the website to create an account: http://www.secondlife.com
Click on the big GET STARTED button (upper right hand corner) to get to the Second Life registration page. You have to pick an available last name from a list, but you are free to indulge yourself when creating a first name. You also have to choose a starting look, but don't worry about the appearance of your avatar at this point. You can later change your features, hair, clothes, skin and more once you enter Second Life.
2. Then, you need to download the software client, so you can see the world in all its glorious visual (and educational) splendor, interact, and have some good wholesome learned fun.
Go to the following web page, and click the large orange Download button for the Windows Installer:
http://secondlife.com/support/downloads.php
The software installs exactly like any other program on your computer. Once in the world, there is plenty to see, and as a freshly-born person (called an avatar), you are started with a basic tutorial on how to move around, and interact with objects and people around you.
I-LEAD has staff in the world that you can contact for help and information:
Krysss Nash's name in SL is Krysss Nash.
Denise Kirkland's SL name is Denise Infinity.
David Castro is Artsuhtaraz Kuhn (just call him "Art").
If you search for any of those names in the world (the search box is always in the top right corner of your Second Life window), we can give you a run-through of the basics, or answer any questions you may have at this stage.
If you type I-LEAD into that same search box, you will get our island location (along with other results to do with us). Clicking the first in the list will reveal island details, as well as a TELEPORT button.
Student Activities Center (SAC)
If you have a microphone for your computer, you can also take advantage of the voice feature in world, to supplement the usual text chat and provide a richer experience. I-LEAD recommends that you get a headset, such as the Logitech ClearChat Pro USB Headset, for the best voice experience.
When you finally make it to our campus, drop us an email letting us know your avatar name, or simply add us as a Friend in the world, so we can help you get started on your virtual life.
secondlife@i-lead.org or SLCampus@i-lead.org
We hope to welcome you to the world soon. Once you are signed up, you can log in using ANY computer with high-speed Internet access that has Second Life installed.
Did we mention that this is FREE?
